Quality requirements for fusion welding of metallic materials

Why ISO 3834?

Welding is classified as a special process the result of which cannot be always verified by testing after the end of welding. Therefore, the quality of a weld must be checked during the production not by inspections and tests of the finished product, but by suitable management of welding processes. This management may be carried out in accordance with the ISO 3834:2005 standard, which ensures quality of the welds of the final product, which then complies with the specified criteria.

Contribution of welding processes product certification

This standard forms a background for proving conformity and for certification of products made through welding processes. A certified manufacturer proves fulfilment of all principles of this standard – execution of high-quality welding processes within requirements of product standards or other regulations.

ISO 3834-2:2005 (higher level of quality requirements)

– intended for products with which safety factors are important together with the level of static and dynamic stress, with materials to be exposed to high stress during the service life of products or if a progressive kind of structural design is involved or new manufacturing procedures not verified in production are involved.

ISO 3834-3:2005 (medium level of quality requirements)

- intended for a wider range of products with common safety requirements, which could be exposed to a level of average dynamic or static stress, products are mostly made of normal materials of known weldability, with ensured mechanical stability of products and prevention of occurrence of unacceptable defects, while qualified WPS procedures are used and a particular level of checking and testing the weldments.

ISO 3834-4:2005 (basic level of quality requirements)

- intended for the range of products with basic safety requirements, which are exposed to average static stress, products are made of normal materials of known weldability, mechanical stability of products is ensured.

Will the welding production management system help marketing?

It is the other way round, marketing must establish requirements concerning the quality management system within welding processes. The client s opinion about the quality of welding operations is important. There is a number of fields where the supplier can only meet the requirements made by product standards, however it is necessary to take into account that according to the client the quality is not only the utility properties of a product, however the client assesses also the quality of related logistic, production supporting and production processes as well as other ways of communication in connection with the final provision of the order. In a number of fields the standardised quality requirements do not exist or the standards fail to respond to modern trends. The welding production management system in accordance with ISO 3834:2005 is a key factor as a company management system owing to which the management can adopt proper strategic decisions about production innovation or for instance about the changes in processes in order to improve quality.

ISO 3834 & EN 1090

The growth of the applicability of steel structures in construction increases the demand not only quality but also on the safety performance of welding work. Construction industry (steel building structures, bridge structures, etc.) is an area where manufacturers face significant demands on safety and quality of welded joints, which is necessary to declare the quality management system certification in welding processes according to ISO 3834:2005 & EN 1090:2007 .
